Hovis Bakery to stylish apartments at Greenford Quay

When Telford Homes planned The Lock, a new build development of 194 stylish, spacious apartments on the former Hovis bakery site at Greenford Quay, west London, they incorporated landscaped gardens in the large central podium courtyard and on a 19th-floor roof space.

Valley Provincial was asked to deliver a turnkey landscaping package that would include hard and soft landscaping, associated design works and ongoing maintenance to keep the landscaping in prime condition.

Project execution

Covid-related delays during previous stages of the project meant that our time schedule was extremely tight. With our resources, experience and carefully managed advanced procurement we were able to meet the revised deadlines for all phases, to the client’s satisfaction.

The development respects the heritage value of its location on the banks of the Grand Union Canal while complementing it with sensitively-created public areas and infrastructure.

Its net-positive biodiverse green infrastructure, landscape management plans and sustainable urban drainage systems all work towards achieving the development’s target of air-quality neutral standard and mitigate its urban heat island effect.

Giving residents access to landscaped courtyards and terraces will help to create a cohesive community with improved wellbeing and reduced urban loneliness.

“We engaged with Valley Provincial to deliver The Lock at Greenford Quays. They were a very professional team and delivered to our detailed specifications as required. Valley Provincial were able to offer good advice for the work, including robust technical resolutions to assist in the final completion. Their input was invaluable in establishing the best solutions for our scheme and to ensure full compliance with technical guidelines and regulations. They worked well with Telford Homes design and construction departments and I would not hesitate to recommend them for future projects.”

“I believe Valley Provincial came up with some innovative solutions to the podium builds-ups to assist in the realisation of the vision for the podium gardens, this greatly assisted the team to overcome a number of very difficult constraints.”

“The aim was to provide a green oasis of calm for resident wellbeing in contrast to the busy surroundings and emerging public realm.

A mixture of hard materials was selected to reflect the building facade and the wider public realm. The inner space contained a wide variety of plant species using the RHS Wildlife Amenity Guide to maximise biodiversity and assist with the passage of fauna and flora across the site and canal corridor. The roof garden layout although simplified, was orientated to maximise views across London.”
