It’s no secret – air pollution in cities is a major problem. Urbanisation has taken its toll, and more and more traffic and industrial emissions has led to soaring levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter in many of the world’s main cities. But is there a way of stopping this air pollution creeping into your office?

And what about London?

Until recently London has been amongst the likes of Beijing and Delhi as the most polluted cities in the world.  Brixton Road in Lambeth famously breached the annual nitrogen dioxide limit just five days into 2017.  However,  latest studies suggest that control interventions such as the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) are starting to make a difference. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go.

The problem with emissions and dirty air isn’t just the contribution to global warming. It’s also causing a range of health problems. Respiratory diseases, lung cancer, heart disease and even strokes are amongst the diseases linked to air pollution. Unfortunately for those living or working in the capital, they have to face this risk on a daily basis. That’s why it’s so important to look for ways to clean up the air…

How can we tackle dirty air?

Cure nature with a simple solution – plants, of course!  Yes, as well as making offices look greener, plants can make the air greener too, absorbing a wide range of chemicals from the atmosphere. Devil’s ivy, for example, reduces levels of benzene – a chemical released by petrol, cigarettes and even building materials like paint and adhesives.

With a proper planting scheme, offices can create their own clean air environment, separate from London’s bubble of pollution. The benefit for workers is huge. Modern day-to-day life, especially in cities, has become increasingly biophonic.  Interestingly, though, a side effect of the Working from Home rule has seen plants enjoy a surge of popularity as people spend much more time in their homes and gardens than they used to.

Now, as office staff start to return to city centres once more, the importance of having cleaner air and more natural surroundings is greater than ever.  In the long run, this makes for a workforce that’s both healthier and happier.
